Bern: Explore the Capital City of Switzerland

Being a first-time visitor, I was stunned by the beauty of Bern. The capital city of Switzerland is rich in culture. You will be surprised to know that it was the home of Albert Einstein for the first 10 years of the 20th century. If you are visiting Bern anytime soon, here are few things that you can check out.

Old Town

I just fell in love with the medieval center of Bern. It is so uniformly arranged. A major portion of the city had been claimed by fire in the year 1405. The all sandstone building has taken over from the old and wooden houses. There are many that have an arcade on the ground floor. This is actually what defines the city’s characteristic. The arcade is 6 kilometers long and you are going to find restaurants, cafes, and bars around here.

Zentrum Paul Klee

On the outskirts of the city is a great museum. This is for one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. Klee had been born outside the city but he went to a gymnasium inside the city. His daughter donated all the inheritance in the year 1995. The museum had been designed by Renzo Piano. It holds temporary shows that exhibit the paintings of Klee.

It is situated at the end of the western city gate of Bern. The tower of Old Town is the icon. This is mainly because of the extraordinary clock which had been installed in 1530. Drop in before the stroke of an hour in order to catch the little show when the early example of automata comes alive just beside astrolabe. This is something that I had never experienced before. You can catch behind the scenes during your daily tour of the tower which starts at around 14:30. I booked in advance since the numbers are limited.
